Citrus County was created in 1887 and was formerly part of Hernando County. It was named for the county's citrus trees. The rich historical culture and variety of shops, water recreation, golfing, and dining experiences, make Citrus County one of the most enjoyable places on the west coast.
Located between Interstate 75 and the coastal communities of Crystal River and Homosassa, Inverness has grown steadily as an anchor for neighborhoods and developments to serve the many visitors who spend a little time here and then decide to become permanent residents. The city is both the county seat of Citrus County and the largest community in it.
Inverness is within easy reach of a rich and varied collection of recreations. Anglers and hunters enjoy the largemouth bass fishery in the Tsala-Apopkaka. chain of lakes, the upland bird hunting of the East Side and the deer hunting of virtually all wooded areas.
